FANG IUAN KAI
Director, K.E.A Design Consultants Inc.
Director, Da Yue Construction Inc.
Director Fang was born in a construction family and loved painting since he was little. Now he has worked in the art and design field over 20 years and is the chief designer in the company.
Director Fang has degree in stage design/ lighting design/ Interior Design.
He’s currently the only designer who has these three different background in Taiwan, and he often use a mélange of those three background knowledge to design cases.
Director Fang travelled at least one month a year, to explore the interaction between spaces, architecture and the people. He also likes to read literary novels and scripts, to discover stories about life and people, which is the basic and important component in the field of design.
Design is a self-discovery journey.
“Most people have too narrow understanding of designers. Designers shouldn’t limit themselves only in the framework of drawing and molding. I commit myself not only in these things. I figured that, designers should be more open to life, your personality and daily experiences. These things can enrich your design.” Fang said.
Fang Yuan Kai is currently the only designer who has triple degrees in stage design, Lighting design and interior design. Also, he has profound knowledge of art and literature. He’s good at transferring life experience to design, as to build an ideal space. He’s the director of K.E.A Creative Group, a college lecturer, a founder of a charity group, and a consultant in government department. The change of multiple roles allows him to experience life from a wider scope. After founding a charity group, he often goes back and forth between Pingtung and Taipei. In September 2010, he was invited to the 20 anniversary of Grand Hyatt Taipei, but before the party, he had gone to Pingtung for disaster relief. Upon arriving the hotel, he was muddy and therefore been stopped by the security. He took out the suits and told the stories that he had been busy for the charity work in Pingtung. The luxurious party clashes with the distress areas. The immediate change of the scenario also signifies the multiple identities that Fang has.
Besides caring for the people and the land, Fang always care for the designers’ thoughts. Just like the dance “Rice” of the Cloud Gate, Fang says that this self-discovery performance also can explain his insistence for the best design. According to Fang, “Through this dance, we can explore the life of land. They dance for spiritual purpose, not for money or following the trend. Fang’s design team does the similar things. Even they spend much time working, they still spares time for study group for reading new books, or like charity works. But Fang thinks this is the best way to get inspiration for the daily lives: by observing carefully the surrounding environment. It’s a valuable sources for design thinking. Fang is walking in the endless movement, thinking quickly without time to rest. He participates in all kinds of social activities and scrabble up his future plans. The design work of Fang is not only professional, but also a cultural memory of our society. By all means, it brings out the spiritual texture of the space.
